This medication is used to treat moderate to severe pain. It can be used on a long-term basis to treat chronic pain such as back pain. How does this treatment work in the body?

This medication has two main functions. Firstly, it binds with opioid receptors in the brain. This blocks the communication of pain signals sent by nerves to the brain. Secondly, it increases the effect of noradrenaline and serotonin which also helps reduce pain.

What is the recommended tramadol dosage?

The recommended dose for adults is as follows:

  • Acute pain such as after an operation - 1 to 2 capsules, three or four times a day.
  • Chronic pain such as arthritis - 1 or 2 capsules to begin with followed by 1 to 2 capsules every four to six hours according to the severity of the pain.
  • Do not take more than 8 capsules (400mg) in 24 hours.

How long do I wait to feel its effects?

You will feel pain relief within 30 to 60 minutes of taking a tramadol 50mg capsule.

Can this medication be used with alcohol?

Alcohol should be avoided because it has the potential to increase the likelihood of tramadol side effects.
