Nytol One a Night

Nytol One a Night

Manufactured and produced by Nytol, Nytol One a Night, is the UK's No. 1 selling sleeping pill. Clinical trials have proven its efficacy in inducing sleep quickly in some people suffering from the symptoms of insomnia. It is available over the counter without a prescription in the United Kingdom, and can generally be found at Boots the chemist, Lloyds pharmacy and Superdrug, as well as at Tesco, ASDA and other large supermarket chains in the UK and across Europe.

What is in Nytol One a Night

Unlike the original version of the medication, Nytol One a Night contains 50 mg Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride per tablet instead of just 25 mg. Diphenhydramine a well-known antihistamine with sedative qualities. Its sedative effects are much stronger than other antihistamines. Diphenhydramine is available in tablet form as well as in an easy to swallow oral version, and as a cream (for allergies). It should be noted that the cream has fewer sedative qualities than the tablets and liquid diphenhydramine. Because they are packed with a double diphenhydramine dosage these aids are extremely popular in the UK.

How Nytol One a Night Works

As an antihistamine, Nytol One a Night works against the actions of histamine. Histamine is an organic, naturally occurring compound in the immune system that is responsible for triggering allergic reactions which result in itching, sneezing and flu like symptoms. People that suffer with allergies use antihistamines to block histamine functions in the body and in stop allergic reactions in their tracks.

By blocking histamine activity, this naturally reduces alertness and creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. By making the user feel drowsy and relaxed, this medication helps to aid sleep in most people.

Nytol One a Night Side Effects

Although rare, some people may experience side effects when taking diphenhydramine. The risk of experiencing side effects increases with age, with users under the age of 65 rarely ever reporting any side effects whatsoever. Even the most common side effects, which include daytime drowsiness and dizziness, along with a dry mouth, are only reported by one in one hundred people. If you are allergic to diphenhydramine you are advised to ask your doctor to suggest an alternative or check out these sleeping pills.

Can I Take Two Nytol One a Night?

After prolonged use of this medication many people report needing to take two tablets (and more), however as the name suggests, it is not designed to be taken in excess of one a night, and this can increase the chances of users experiencing unwanted side effects. Taking two tablets also increases the chances of users causing liver damage. We recommend that users always use any medication exactly as outlined on the patient information leaflet, or as specified by their doctor.

Does Nytol One a Night Work?

While most people do find this medication extremely effective for inducing sleep, some people claim to feel no effects from the medication whatsoever. Many people that use Nytol One a Night find that initially it helps them get to sleep but that they generally end up turning to the internet to order strong sleeping tablets online. Strong sleeping pills are generally only available with a prescription from a doctor, and are specially designed for treating bad bouts of insomnia, whereas antihistamines are an allergy medication with a primary role of blocking histamine activity, and only make users feel sleepy as a side effect.

Because of this, people that suffer from chronic insomnia, often find that Nytol One a Night simply doesn't work to relieve their symptoms. In many cases, people end up taking Nytol One a Night every night, which can be bad for the users' liver.

Nytol One a Night: OTC Sleeping Pills

This medication is a pharmacy (P) medication. P medication is also referred to as OTC medication, or over the counter medication. This means that it has been approved for sale by pharmacists, and that a doctor's prescription is not required. Users can buy Nytol One a Night at most high street chemists, such as Superdrug, Boots and Lloyds, at leading supermarkets such as ASDA and Tesco, or at an online pharmacy of their choice. The problem with medications that are available over the counter is that they are generally multi-purpose treatments, rather than specific medication, and most importantly they are generally not recommended by doctors!

Should You Buy Nytol One a Night?

If you suffer from chronic insomnia, or if you are suffering from rebound insomnia, Nytol One a Night may not be the best sleep aid for you. Doctors generally would never advise that people suffering from insomnia use this medication. In fact, as outlined above, diphenhydramine is a P medicine, which is available over the counter without a doctor's prescription. For this reason most doctors in general, advise patients suffering from insomnia / sleep deprivation to buy strong sleeping pills such as Eszopiclone (Lunesta), Zopiclone (Zimovane / Imovane), Zolpidem (Ambien) or Nitrazepam (Mogadom) instead of diphenhydramine based medication as it only makes users feel sleepy as a side effect.

Remember that sleeping pills are designed to cure insomnia over a short period of time - generally inside a maximum of four weeks. No doctor that we interviewed recommends using sleep aid medication every night as they can be addictive, and that the very idea of Nytol One a Night should have never got past the drawing board! For this reason, many doctor's and health care experts alike, do not agree that users should be able to buy Nytol One a Night so freely.

We are keen to hear your opinion and would appreciate it if you left a comment in the comments section below. Have you tried this sleep aid? In your opinion, is it safe to take Nytol One a Night Every Night?

Hi Sarah, Great article. Having tried this product with limited success your article has been a great help in treating my chronic Insomnia. Although the medication was making me drowsy I would rarely sleep for longer than 3 or 4 hours and would be unable to get back to sleep. The strong sleeping pills have changed this and i manage to sleep for a full 8 hours each night now. Thanks Charlotte Tudor

Dear Sarah, Excellent piece, your blog sheds light on the whole inappropriateness of this “one A night” medication. Sleeping conditions such as Insomnia are no laughing matter and medication should only be taken for a set period of time to help reset the body’s natural sleep wake cycle. Fiona Hunt
