Ativan

Ativan

Ativan is a benzodiazepine which is included in the World Health Organisation's list of essential medications. It is a widely used medication and ranks highly among the most popular in Western countries due to its efficacy and the wide range of conditions it treats. It was patented and branded in 1963 and sold by the pharmaceutical company Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in 1977, and it's considered one of the original benzodiazepines along with diazepam. You can buy Ativan 2 mg in the UK without a prescription if you are suffering from conditions such as anxiety. We will go into more detail about the uses of the medication below.

What Ativan is Used For

Ativan 2 mg is primarily an anti-anxiety medication, however it has a range of uses. As well as treating a range of anxiety disorders, it can be used for the treatment of insomnia, alcohol withdrawal, and some types of epilepsy. There are different types of anxiety that people suffer with, including generalised anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and phobias. If you experience any of the following, you may have an anxiety disorder:

  • Worrying a lot about many different things
  • Feelings of dread or like something awful is going to happen
  • Fear of social situations or that you will say the wrong thing
  • Panic attacks i.e. intense fear and feeling like you can't breathe
  • Irrational fears, such as being outdoors

The symptoms above are not exhaustive and you may not experience all of them to have an anxiety disorder. It is really characterised by how much your anxiety symptoms impact your day-to-day life. If you feel like your daily functioning or quality of life is severely reduced, you may want to consider Ativan 2 mg to help with your symptoms.

Is Ativan the Same as Lorazepam?

The short answer is yes. Ativan 2 mg and lorazepam 2 mg have exactly the same active ingredient, it is just that the former is the brand which was patented, and the latter is the generic version. When a patent runs out, other companies can manufacture the exact same medication but under different names. The reason patents exist is because the pharmaceutical companies pay a lot of money and put in a lot of time and research into developing medications. So, it's only fair that they can sell it exclusively before other companies which haven't had to invest any time or money, can do the same.

How Does Ativan Work?

Ativan is a benzodiazepine, so it has a similar mechanism of action to others such as Valium and Xanax, however a lower dose is required for the same effect. It is an antagonist and has a high affinity for gamma amino-butyric acid (GABA) receptors, which increase the amount of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. The effects of GABA are enhanced due to the increased frequency of chloride channels opening in the neuronal cell membrane. This leads to sedation and relaxation due to a reduction in certain electrical signals in the brain. It has low lipid-solubility but a high degree of protein binding, so although it has a shorter half-life than diazepam for example, it isn't redistributed to other parts of the body and the levels remain at their highest for longer.

Before You Buy Ativan

Before buying anxiety medication in the UK such as Ativan online, it is important to be aware of any contraindications or groups who should avoid taking these types of medication. You should not take it if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients listed in the medication, if you have breathing problems such as sleep apnoea, a muscle weakness disease called myasthenia gravis, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should also avoid it or check if it's ok to take it, if you are also taking strong painkillers which contain opioids such as tramadol, or other benzodiazepines. If you are unsure about any of the above, consult with your GP to make sure it is safe for you.

How to Use Ativan

Ativan, also marketed as lorazepam in the UK, comes in tablet form and it should be swallowed whole with a glass of water. If you are taking it for generalised anxiety, you will usually take 1 in the morning, re-dosing as necessary up to a maximum dose of 4 mg per day, unless advised otherwise by your GP. It is important to space the doses evenly throughout the day otherwise you may have too much in your system. If you take it for panic disorder, you should take it when you feel your symptoms coming on or if you are going into a situation when you know you will be triggered. For example, if you have agoraphobia (a fear of going outside), you should take it 30 to 60 minutes before going out. Similarly, if you take it for insomnia, you should take it about an hour before you want to go to sleep.

Ativan Side Effects

There isn't any medication which does not have the potential to cause side effects, and unfortunately Ativan 2 mg is no different in that respect. Fortunately however, most side effects associated with the medication are mild and tend to go away on their own. The most common side effects are as follows:

  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Losing your balance
  • Feeling weak

If you feel drowsy or lightheaded it is important not to drive or use machinery while using this medication as it could be dangerous. Some people experience serious side effects, however these are rare. If you experience any of the following, you should not continue to take the medication and contact your GP:

  • Severe mood swings
  • Hallucinations or delusions
  • Amnesia (not being able to remember things)
  • Syncope or constantly falling over
  • Shallow breathing or difficulty breathing
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes

Some people also experience anaphylaxis, which is a severe allergic reaction to medications, but again this is extremely rare. You should call 999 or go to A&E if you experience this. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include swelling of the lips and face, blotchy skin, and the throat closing up.
